A Loner's Notebook

NOTES ON THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE

"Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life… But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin’ else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin?"

"Critics have described Martin’s work as dark and cynical.[13] His first novel, Dying of the Light, set the tone for most of his future work; it is set on a mostly abandoned planet that is slowly becoming uninhabitable as it moves away from its sun. This story, and many of Martin’s others, have a strong sense of melancholy. His characters are often unhappy or, at least, unsatisfied – trying to stay idealistic in a ruthless world. Many have elements of tragic heroes in them. Reviewer T. M. Wagner writes, “Let it never be said Martin doesn’t share Shakespeare’s fondness for the senselessly tragic.”[14] This gloominess can be an obstacle for some readers. The Inchoatus Group writes, “If this absence of joy is going to trouble you, or you’re looking for something more affirming, then you should probably seek elsewhere."

"An eccentric is a person whose mind and senses are excited by things that the average citizen does not even notice. And, per contra, the average eccentric… is utterly baffled and bored by the adjacent tourist who boasts of his business connections. In that sense, I often feel lost; but then, other people feel lost in my presence too."

"That reminded me of when you get to a part of a video game that glitches and the characters never begin their scripted actions. Its a little unsettling then, I cant imagine real life."

"What an overwhelming lesson to all artists! Be not afraid of absurdity; do not shrink from the fantastic. Within a dilemma, choose the most unheard-of, the most dangerous, solution. Be brave, be brave!"
